OPENING

Picture this.

It's April 2022. American and Ukrainian naval officers are on a routine intelligence-sharing call. Then something appears on American radar screens — the Moskva. Russia's Black Sea flagship. A symbol of Russian naval dominance, named after Moscow itself, carrying five hundred sailors and enough firepower to enforce a blockade of Ukraine's coastline.

The New York Times reported what happened next.

The Ukrainians thanked the Americans — and politely excused themselves from the call.

Minutes later, two Ukrainian Neptune missiles struck the Moskva. It sank.

The first enemy flagship sent to the bottom since World War Two.

Ukraine had no navy. They won anyway.

That moment was a preview of something much bigger. Ukraine has become — entirely by necessity — the world's most important laboratory for modern warfare. And the lessons being written there will define every conflict for the next generation.

Today I want to talk you through three of them.


POINT ONE — The $400 Revolution

Four hundred dollars.

That's what a first-person-view drone costs. An FPV. Picture a racing quadcopter from a hobby shop, fitted with an armor-piercing warhead. Now imagine ten thousand of them launched in a single day.

In 2022, Ukrainian soldiers were duct-taping grenades to DJI Mavics — the same drone a wedding photographer uses. By 2024, those improvised weapons had evolved into purpose-built FPV drones flying at a hundred miles per hour, guided by a live camera fed straight to a pilot's goggles.

The New York Times' "Overmatched" editorial series, published in December 2025, reported that these $400 drones now account for sixty to seventy percent of all destroyed Russian equipment. And Russian military medical reports tell the same story from the other side: more than seventy-five percent of their battlefield casualties come from FPV strikes.

Ukraine produced over two million FPVs in 2024 alone. The target for 2025 was four million.


POINT TWO — The Invisible Arms Race

Russia adapted.

They flooded the battlefield with electronic warfare — jamming systems that severed the radio link between a drone and its pilot mid-flight. By mid-2024, a radio-controlled FPV in a contested zone had roughly a twenty percent chance of actually hitting its target. The technology was being beaten by the counter-technology.

So the engineers got creative. And this is where it gets remarkable.

Russia's answer was a fiber-optic cable. Literally fishing line, spooled out behind the drone in flight. No radio signal — nothing to jam. Unjammable by definition. They deployed these first in Kursk in August 2024. Ukraine scrambled to catch up. Today both sides produce between twenty and fifty thousand of these drones every month.

Then someone attached a seventy-dollar AI chip to the nose.

Here's how it works. The drone operator designates a target from outside the jamming zone. The AI locks on. The drone flies through the electronic wall — and finishes the strike on its own. No signal. No human decision in the final seconds of flight. Success rate went from twenty percent to eighty percent.

The New York Times editorial board said it plainly: this is where autonomous killing has already begun.


POINT THREE — A New Economy of War

Now here's the uncomfortable part — for the United States, and for every Western military watching.

Ukraine's innovation didn't come from a defense contractor. It came from garages. From a network of over five hundred small workshops competing for frontline contracts. Soldiers call engineers directly from the front line. A new drone design can go from sketch to combat test in days.

The Times called it a "war of factories" — but not any factory we know. No Lockheed Martin. No five-year procurement cycle. Silicon Valley meets the trenches.

The contrast with America is stark. The F-35 — our most advanced fighter — spends more time in maintenance than in the air, according to the Times. That same "Overmatched" series revealed that in classified war games pitting the U.S. against China, American forces consistently come up short.

As of mid-2026, the entire United States military had fielded roughly thirty-five hundred FPV attack drones.

Ukraine fields that before breakfast.


CLOSE

The engineers who built the Sea Baby — the drone boat that has driven Russia's Black Sea Fleet from Crimea — built their first prototype in a garage behind a house in Kyiv, while the city was still under bombardment.

Former Pentagon official Andrew Weber was quoted in the Times putting the stakes this way:

"The speed of warfare will soon outpace human ability to control it."

That's not a prediction. On the battlefields of eastern Ukraine, it's already underway.

The $400 drone revolution didn't start in a research lab. It started with a soldier, a quadcopter, and a roll of duct tape.
